Making time for yourself, one stitch at a time
By Melanie & Dominique
Most days are already full before they begin. There is always something waiting, something unfinished, something asking for attention.
In the middle of that, time for yourself can feel out of reach. Not because it is not important, but because it keeps getting pushed aside.
You don’t need to change your life to find space for yourself. You only need a small moment that belongs to you.
Start with something simple. A time of day that feels slightly quieter than the rest. Early morning before the house wakes up. Evening when things slow down. Or a short gap between tasks that usually gets filled with scrolling or rushing.
Protect that moment. Even ten minutes can change the tone of a day.
Make it easy to begin. Keep what you need in one place so there is no searching or setting up. The less effort it takes to start, the more likely you are to return to it.
Let it be imperfect. Some days you will stitch a lot. Some days you will manage only a few minutes. Some days you will not sit down at all. None of that removes the value of the habit.
When you do sit down, keep it simple. One thread. One colour. One small section at a time. The goal is not progress. The goal is presence.
Notice what happens when your attention narrows. The noise in your mind softens. Your pace slows. You stop holding everything at once.
A few small anchors can help:
Sit in the same place when you can
Begin before you feel ready
Stop without finishing a full section
Keep it light, not something to complete under pressure
There is something steady about returning to your hands. They already know what to do. You don’t need to push them into productivity. You only need to let them move.
Over time, this becomes less about making space and more about recognising that the space already exists. It was there in the gaps you used to fill with everything else.
A few stitches can be enough to bring you back to yourself. Not fully. Not perfectly. Just enough to feel present again.
And that is where it starts.
