The Symbolism of the Octopus: Intelligence, Mystery and Creativity

Few creatures of the ocean have fascinated humans as much as the octopus.

With its eight arms, unusual appearance and incredible ability to adapt, the octopus feels almost like a creature from another world. For centuries, it has inspired myths, artists and storytellers, becoming a symbol rich with meaning.

For our Tentaculous design, we chose the octopus as our inspiration because it represents movement, curiosity and adaptability. Just like a piece of embroidery that slowly reveals itself stitch by stitch, the octopus reminds us that the most fascinating things often take time to unfold.

A creature unlike any other

The octopus is one of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean.

It can learn, solve problems and adapt quickly to its surroundings. It uses its intelligence to explore, observe and find creative solutions.

Its soft, flexible body allows it to change shape, camouflage itself and move through the water with incredible grace. This ability to transform has made the octopus a symbol of adaptability, resilience and change.

A symbol of intelligence and creativity

Across many cultures, the octopus has been connected with intelligence and knowledge.

Its eight arms, each capable of movement and exploration, represent many ideas coming together. They remind us that creativity does not always follow a straight path. Sometimes inspiration comes from many different places before becoming something new.

For artists and makers, the octopus represents the freedom to explore, experiment and create in unexpected ways.

The octopus in myths and legends

For centuries, the ocean has been seen as a mysterious world filled with unknown creatures and hidden stories.

In ancient mythology, the sea represented mystery, power and the forces of nature that humans could not always understand. Sea creatures often appeared as symbols of the unknown and the imagination.

In Polynesian traditions, some legends feature multi-armed sea creatures connected to creation stories and the forces of nature. The octopus is often seen as an ancient being linked to the depths of the ocean.

In Japan, the octopus has appeared in art and popular traditions for generations. It can represent transformation, strength and the energy of life.

Between mystery and protection

The octopus has always carried an air of mystery. Living beneath the surface of the ocean, it exists in a world that we still know so little about.

Its ability to disappear through camouflage has linked it with ideas of protection, intuition and hidden strength. It reminds us that sometimes observation and patience are just as important as action.

Its flowing tentacles can also represent connection. They reflect the many relationships, experiences and influences that shape our own journeys.

An inspiration for creators

The shape of the octopus naturally inspires artists.

Its flowing curves, graceful movement and balance between strength and elegance make it a fascinating subject for painting, sculpture, textiles and embroidery.

In Tentaculous, the curling tentacles create movement throughout the design. The vibrant shades of orange, pink and purple stand out against the deep Royal Blue fabric, bringing together the mystery of the ocean with a joyful burst of colour.

Like the octopus itself, embroidery invites us to slow down. Each stitch adds another part of the story until the whole picture begins to appear.

The lesson of the octopus

The octopus offers a simple message: stay curious, adapt and keep exploring.
